A swimming pool allows you to enjoy a relaxing vacation right in the comfort of your backyard. But keeping it pristine and inviting does require pool maintenance, which may seem overwhelming for first-timers. Learn the basic best practices to implement in the following guide.

5 Essential Pool Maintenance Tasks

1. Regular Water Circulation

Circulate water in the pool by running the pump at least eight hours daily. The pump moves the water through the filter, getting rid of dust, debris, and other particles. Regular water circulation also keeps algae and bacteria growth at bay.

2. Skim the Pool Surface

3. Check the Water Chemistry Balance

Check the chemical balance of your pool with a test kit every week. The ideal pH should be between 7.2 and 7.6, which you can adjust with a pH increaser or decreaser as needed. Also, check the chlorine levels of the pool, which should be between one and four parts per million.

4. Backwash the Filter

Backwashing cleans the filter so it can keep the pool free of dirt and debris. Set the filter valve to backwash and let it run until the water turns clear on the sight glass, then change to rinse. Some systems allow dirty water to flow directly into the drain, while others require a backwash hose connected to the waste port.

5. Get Professional Pool Maintenance

Get professional pool maintenance services at least once a year. A pool service provider will assess the efficiency of your system, advise you on your water sanitation program, and catch any signs of disrepair before it leads to further damage and inconvenience.
