Your HVAC system relies on a clean, functioning filter to run smoothly. When the filter becomes clogged, airflow is blocked, the system's fans have to work harder, and air quality degrades as dust begins to slip through the system. To prevent these issues, here are a few signs that it's time for a filter change.

When Should You Change the Filter in the HVAC System?

1. It's Been a While

A good rule of thumb is that filters should be changed after every three months of use—or more frequently if you have pets or someone in your home experiences allergies. The exact timetable can shift depending on how much dust is in your home's air and what type of filter you use.

2. You Can't See Through the Filter

To test whether an air filter is too dirty, hold it up to the sun or a light bulb. If you can see light through it, it still has some life left. If you can't, it's time to clean a reusable filter or replace a disposable one.

3. Your Home Is Dusty

HVACWhen your air filter is working properly, it will reduce the amount of dust circulating through your home. If you can see lots of dust in the air or have to clean off surfaces frequently, it's time for a replacement. If you aren't sure whether the amount of dust you're seeing is unusual, schedule a professional air quality inspection from an HVAC contractor.

5. Your Home Has Higher Power Bills

Because air can't flow through a clogged filter easily, the HVAC system's fans will work harder to keep air circulating. This results in higher energy consumption, which you should be able to spot on your monthly bill.
