Warm sunshine may feel wonderful and look beautiful, but potent ultraviolet — UV — rays can pose a serious threat to the skin. Protecting yourself from the sun is key to reducing the odds of developing skin cancer. It can also preserve your complexion by hindering the progression of fine lines, wrinkles, and sunspots. Here are three key ways dermatologists recommend to protect your skin from those harmful UV rays.

How to Prevent Sun Damage on Your Skin

1. Apply Sunscreen Daily

dermatologistsAlthough sunscreen is typically associated with spring and summer, it’s important to apply the substance year round—even when it’s cloudy outside. Clouds may block the sun from brightening your day, but they don’t prevent its rays from penetrating your skin. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, as much as 80% of those rays can push through the clouds. Apply it liberally, and smooth it on at least every two hours. Dermatologists suggest wearing a broad-spectrum formula that combats UVA rays — those that contribute to wrinkles and sunspots — and UVB rays — those that burn your skin. Don’t forget to swipe an SPF-infused lip balm onto your lips, too; they’re just as susceptible to wrinkling and burning.

2. Limit Outdoor Time

The harshest sunlight and most potent UV rays are present between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. It’s best to avoid spending time outside at that time if it’s possible, or take frequent indoor breaks to prevent consistent exposure to the sunlight. Be sure to reapply your sunscreen during these breaks; also, replenish yourself with water to prevent dehydration.

3. Wear Protective Gear

The American Academy of Dermatology™ advises people to protect their skin with other barriers, such as wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses that provide 100% protection against UV rays. If you spend lots of time outside, it’s also worth investing in clothing with a built-in ultraviolet protection factor — UPF.
