Every 48 minutes, someone in the United States dies in a drunk driving accident. This staggering statistic illustrates just how important it is for every single driver to exercise caution and awareness when on the road. To that end, below are three tips for identifying the signs of drunk driving and avoiding potentially intoxicated motorists.

How to Identify Drunk Driving

1. Trouble Staying in the Proper Lane

This type of issue can include a number of different dangers, including swerving, drifting, or weaving between lanes, hugging the far side of the road, straddling lanes, and not staying within the lane when making a turn. If you encounter this behavior, get out of the path of the vehicle as quickly and safely as you can. Pull over to the side of the road until you’re a safe distance from the flow of traffic. Call 911 and report the suspected drunk driver, being as detailed as possible in your description of the license plate, car, and behavior observed. Notifying the authorities will protect other motorists.

2. Excessive Braking

In this situation, an intoxicated motorist is overcompensating for their condition by driving extremely cautiously, braking frequently, and only very gradually reaching the speed limit. This behavior can still be hazardous, however, if the flow of surrounding traffic is brisk and consistent. Carefully pass a slow driver, staying as far from them as conditions and safety allow.

3. Continuous Tailgating

In the mind of an intoxicated motorist, they may be attempting to avoid a drunk driving accident by following closely on your heels. The logic here is that if you’re sober and your vehicle is leading, all the drunk driver must do is focus their attention on you and mimic your driving behavior to stay clear of trouble. This can be a safety issue because if you brake suddenly, they could easily crash into you — especially since alcohol slows reaction times. Change lanes to avoid tailgaters, or, slow down or pull over to let them pass; then, call 911.
