With summer quickly approaching, many people will be grilling outside with their friends and family. From juicy burgers to marinated chicken, there are many delicious foods you can grill up, but they’re not all great for your heart health. Keep these barbecuing tips in mind before you hit the grill.

3 Tips for Healthy Barbecuing

1. Choose Healthier Sides

Macaroni salad, chips, and baked beans are popular sides at barbecues. However, these foods contain a lot of sodium, saturated fats, and sugars. Instead, grill up your favorite fruits and vegetables, such as eggplant, pineapple, and asparagus. Coat them with a healthy oil before grilling to prevent them from sticking.

2. Pick Fish & Chicken Over Red Meat

heart healthWhile it’s fine to grill burgers and steaks occasionally, try not to eat them all the time. Red meat contains high amounts of saturated fats, which raise cholesterol levels and impede the flow of blood to the heart. Fish, like salmon, on the other hand, contains omega-3 fatty acids that decrease inflammation throughout your body, reducing your risk of heart disease and other heart health problems. Chicken breast is also better for you, as long as you trim the skin off. If you’re still craving red meat, opt for loin and round cuts, as they have the least amount of fat.

3. Take It Easy on the Salt

When grilling your meats, be careful about how much salt you use. Too much sodium can be detrimental to heart health, especially if you’re over the age of 50 or have higher blood pressure. Instead, flavor your meat with healthier spices, such as cumin, chili powder, or paprika.
