Whether you’re trimming trees or mowing the lawn, what fuel you use for your small outdoor equipment can have a significant effect on its life span. The amount of ethanol present in the fuel is especially important. Here’s what you should know about how much is too much and what damage it might cause.

What Type of Ethanol Is Found in Fuel?

Ethanol is a renewable fuel derived from corn as well as other plant sources. Because of its lower emission output, ethanol has become a fixture at pumps throughout the country. You’ll typically find an option for a blend of ethanol and traditional gasoline. The problem for small outdoor equipment is when the ethanol percentage becomes too high. You’re likely to run into both E10 fuel (meaning 10% ethanol) and E15 (15%). Whereas E10 has a small enough amount of ethanol that it won’t harm your machine, E15 can damage the engines of small equipment.

How Does Ethanol Fuel Affect Small Outdoor Equipment?

outdoor equipmentEthanol burns at a higher temperature than typical gasoline. As a result, the engine of your lawn mower or chainsaw will quickly overheat. At high temperatures, the fuel can become corrosive, deforming the engine and rendering it useless. Just as importantly, E15 fuel has a greater capacity to take on tiny molecules of water that may be present in the air. That excess internal humidity can make it nearly impossible for the engine to start, leading to a great amount of frustration.
