Spring is finally here, and it’s time to start planning summer fun, beginning with getting your watercraft out of boat storage. Although your vessel is secure in winter storage, it may need some fine-tuning after sitting for months. Here are three steps to getting your vehicle ready for the water.

3 Steps to Transition from Winter Boat Storage

1. Perform a Thorough Inspection

Ideally, you should have inspected the vessel and performed necessary repairs before taking it to a boat storage unit. However, even if you did, there may be a few things that aren’t working correctly. Check the hull first and check for scratches, cracks, loose screws, or mildew beneath the cover. Wash it and wax it. Also, check hinges, hoses, lighting, and all moving parts. Change lights and oil elements as needed. If the boat needs a fresh coat of paint, this is a good time to do it.

2. Update Safety & First Aid Equipment

boat storageSafety is a priority on the water, and it’s essential to check and maintain your safety and first aid supplies. First aid kits have expiration dates, and some items need to be replaced periodically. Make sure all of your items are up-to-date and compliant with local regulations. Stock up on supplies such as flares, non-perishable food stock, flashlights, and fire extinguishers. Make sure you have enough flotation devices and life jackets for all passengers.

3. Check the Electrical System & Fluids

Make sure all electronics are in working order and corrosion-free, and the batteries are adequately charged. Clean and lubricate any dirty battery terminals. Make sure you have spare bulbs on board as well. Check that all connections and clasps are secure and make a note of any wiring that needs repair. Check the fluids as well. If you topped them off before putting them in storage, you might be good to go. However, if you drained them before putting the vessel away for winter or fluids have expired, you’ll need to replace them.
