Most people struggle with putting makeup in their waterline or eye drops in their eyes, so it’s no surprise that some can find inserting contact lenses difficult. Many first-time users also get hesitant because of myths and horror stories surrounding lenses, or because they fear they may hurt themselves. If you’re interested in wearing contacts but are afraid to touch your eyes, here are some tips that can help ease your discomfort.

How to Apply Contact Lenses for First-Time Users

Practice

When applying contacts, use your dominant hand to place the lens in your eye. Your non-dominant hand should keep your top eyelid up and your bottom eyelid down so you don’t blink in the process. Practice this without a lens a couple of times to make you more confident, then try the same movement with your contacts.

Use a Mirror

Looking at the mirror contact lenseswhile applying your contact lenses guides you on where to put your hands. It also takes out the fear and the feeling of uncertainty because you see where the product goes. If you’re a first-timer, always apply your contacts with the help of a mirror. When you get comfortable, you may be able to repeat this without aid.

Look Up

Sliding contacts on the white part of your eyes instead of right onto your pupil can ease your fear because you won’t see your finger pointing into your eyes. Closing them for a moment and blinking a few times after application will make the lenses fall into place.
