Fountains can transform residential landscaping into a tranquil oasis. The ambient sounds of trickling water will help you escape into a meditative state or contemplate your natural surroundings. However, like other landscaping elements, your fountain requires routine upkeep to maintain its appearance and function. Below are a few steps to take to keep your fountain running at peak efficiency.

How to Maintain Your Fountain

1. Remove Debris

Use a net to remove small debris from the water every couple of days. If leaves and twigs build up, they can get caught in the water pump and prevent it from functioning properly. Remove the water pump and clean out any trapped debris using a cloth and an old toothbrush.

2. Keep the Fountain Running

landscapingDon’t turn off your fountain unless it’s to conduct a routine deep cleaning. When the pump is turned off, the fountain can’t circulate water and filter out debris. Your water will become dirtier at a faster rate, and other contaminants, such as algae, may begin to form as well. Despite the common misconception, turning off the pump for extended periods at a time will not maximize the fountain’s lifespan.

3. Use Distilled Water

Using regular water in your fountain can lead to the buildup of minerals and algae, which stain the stone and are difficult to remove. Distilled water is the best option to keep your fountain looking like a beautiful part of your landscaping. However, you can also use water treatment products designed to prevent hard water stains.
