It’s spring, and it seems like everything has sprung back to life. While it’s a beautiful time of year, you may also notice your home has a few new visitors. From March to April and July to August, squirrels birth litters of babies, and they may find your attic the perfect place to raise a family. Below are three tips for keeping rodents from getting in through your house siding or roof.

3 Ways to Keep Squirrels Out of Your Attic

1. Inspect the Attic

Your first line of defense is an attic without easy entries for the squirrels. Like mice, squirrels can squeeze through holes much smaller than you might think. Once you’ve marked possible entries, use caulk or hardware mesh to keep squirrels out. You should also have your house siding sealed at its joints and where it meets the eaves.

2. Use a Repellant

If you want a humane way to keep squirrels off your property, find deterrents that use powerful odors or piercing sounds to scare them away. For example, a sonic repeller will emit a high-frequency pitch that won’t be audible to humans. You can also mist property lines with vinegar or use musk from predators, such as foxes.

3. Prune Your Trees

Not only does this limit the ways squirrels can get into your attic, but it also makes your home maintenance a little easier. The fewer leaves and twigs lodged in your gutters, the less often you’ll have to clean them.
