Having a newborn infant brings a host of new responsibilities and experiences for new mothers. One of these is breastfeeding, which can be more challenging than some moms realize. Below are some tips to keep in mind to help you breastfeed your child successfully.

Do:

Feed the baby eight to ten times daily.

Mothers start breastfeeding immediately after birth. Infants have small stomachs and require constant nourishment for healthy growth. As a result, try not to have a gap of more than two hours between feedings.

See a lactation expert for any problems.

If you encounter any difficulties, such as trouble latching or an inconsistent flow, see a lactation expert for breastfeeding advice. They can work with you and your newborn infant to determine how to make the experience easier for both of you.

Remember to change your baby into a fresh diaper before you sit down to breastfeed. When they feel clean and dry, they tend to latch better. If the baby is hungry and has a dirty diaper, opt to change them first.

Don’t:

Get discouraged.

Having difficulties breastfeeding is completely normal and more common than people realize. If you have trouble, don’t think that it reflects on your abilities as a mother or says something about your connection with your child. A pediatrician can help find the solution that works best for both of you.

Wait for the baby to cry.

Crying is generally the last resort for hungry babies; your newborn infant will show that they are hungry in other ways long before they start to cry. They may push out their tongue, bring their hand near their mouth, lick their hand or lips, or open their mouth. These are all signs that it’s time to eat.

Forget cleanliness.

Cleaning isn’t just for bottles. Before and after each feeding, wash your hands and wipe down the breast area with a damp cloth. You don’t want the baby to consume any residue, such as sweat or lotion, that might be on the area.
