If your office’s toilet overflows, it can be frustrating and even lead to water damage. If you notice your toilet flushing slower than usual, it’s worth calling a plumber before larger plumbing issues occur. However, if it does overflow, here’s how to manage the situation.

How to Respond if You Have an Overflowing Toilet

1. Cut Off the Water Supply

Prevent the situation from worsening by shutting off the water valve near the bottom part of the bowl. If you can’t find it or your toilet doesn’t have one, remove the tank lid and locate the float. Rig it so that it remains in a high position to prevent water from filling up the tank. If you notice your toilet running for longer than usual, turn off the water. Cutting off the supply will lessen the issue if you have a blockage.

2. Clean Up

plumberTo prevent water damage and flooding, clean up right away. Mop the floor and if possible, collect any dripping water using a bucket. Pour the toilet water down a drain when finished. After cleaning the water, wash and sanitize the surfaces using bleach and warm water.

3. Remove the Clog

Before attempting to unclog the toilet, put on disposable gloves for protection against germs. Place the plunger over the center hole, applying steady downward pressure that gradually intensifies and speeds up. When used properly, a toilet plunger will force out the clog to facilitate water flow. If you have one, crank a toilet auger or plumbing snake down the hole to clear out objects blocking the plumbing. Also, pour a cup of baking soda and vinegar into the toilet and let it sit for a few hours. The chemical reaction can help break down the substances clogging the toilet.

4. Reset the Float Mechanism

Once you’re sure that there are no more clogs, rig the float to turn it back on. Make sure the chain doesn’t have kinks or knots, and the float isn’t tangled with other tank parts. Turn the water supply back on to ensure it’s no longer overflowing. If the water doesn’t stop, reach out to a plumber.
