A screened-in porch allows you to enjoy beautiful weather and the great outdoors without having to deal with bugs and pests. Whether your porch needs seasonal cleaning or a window screen replacement, proper maintenance will keep it looking as good as new for years to come. Use the following step-by-step guide to clean your porch the right way.

How to Clean a Screened Porch

1. Dust & Vacuum

The first step you’ll want to take is getting rid of the surface dirt. Dust ceiling fans, walls, and corners, then vacuum rugs and flooring. Make sure to use a different vacuum cleaner than the one you use indoors, or you may end up bringing pollen into your home.

2. Hose the Mesh

After sweeping out the dirt and dust, clear all furniture and rugs out of your porch. Bring out your hose and set it to “jet”. Starting from the top, spray your screens thoroughly to knock out dirt, pollen, spiderwebs, and other grime. If you break the mesh or notice a tear during this process, your porch is due for a window screen replacement.

3. Wash the Furniture

Wash blankets, cushions, and pillow covers according to the manufacturer’s label. Clean appliances and electronics using a safe commercial cleaner.

4. Scrub Away Grime

When the screen is dry, take some time to make sure you didn’t miss a spot. Sometimes grime left sitting over a long period of time can be difficult to remove. Use a wire brush to scrape away the debris. If there is any mold growing, use a bleach and water solution to eliminate the issue.

5. Clean the Rug

Even in a screened-in environment, rugs are susceptible to accumulating dirt and allergens. Hang your rug over a fence or railing and hose it down. Be sure to spray every inch so that the pressure will pull debris loose. Once it dries, set it back on your porch and vacuum over it one more time. With everything back in place, your screened porch will be fresh and ready for use.
