The days are getting longer, which means kids will be playing outside for more hours each day. It also means that their risk of UV exposure will increase. Although you may already have your own sun protection routine, pediatric doctors recommend that you begin instilling good habits in your children from an early age. Below are three tips to ensure that your family enjoys the sun without having to worry about consequences for your health.

How to Enjoy the Summer Sun Safely

1. Use Sunscreen

Before your family heads outside, everyone needs to apply a layer of broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Help your kids cover exposed skin areas that are frequently missed, such as the earlobes, eyelids, neck, back, palms of hands, and soles of feet. However, don’t assume that you’re all set for a day at the beach just because you put on sunscreen in the morning. Pediatric doctors also recommend that you reapply every two hours you’re outside.

2. Wear Sunglasses

pediatricsYour skin isn't the only part of your body that is affected by the sun's UVA and UVB rays. Everyone in your family should have sunglasses made to block out 99% to 100% of this radiation. This will help to lower your risk of cataracts, macular degeneration, and pterygium. Consider purchasing prescription sunglasses for your children that require corrective lenses. Pediatric doctors also recommend wearing a wide-brimmed hat for extra eye and face protection.

3. Limit Exposure

Try to minimize your time outdoors between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the sun is highest in the sky and the UV radiation is the strongest. Also, don't spend too long at places where UV light is reflective—such as near water and light-colored sand—or at least try to select times when the sun is lower in the sky. Infants, especially, shouldn't be taken outside very often during these hours. If they are, pediatric doctors recommend that you cover younger children’s skin with protective clothing and a hat while keeping them in a carrier that blocks most sunlight. You and your older children are better off using an umbrella and wearing long sleeves and pants.
