Dentures may not require the same brushing, flossing, and rinsing routine that natural teeth do, but you still need to care for them properly. Keeping your dentures clean will not only ensure that they last for years, but it will also protect your teeth, tongue, and gums when you wear them. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when it comes to caring for dentures.

Denture Care 101

1. Rinse Them After Every Meal

Rinsing your dentures after every meal will wash away any food particles until you brush them. Simply place a folded towel in the sink or fill it with water so they won’t break if dropped, and then run them under cool water. When rinsing them, avoid bending or breaking any clasps.

2. Brush Them Daily

Ldenturesike natural teeth, dentures should be brushed regularly. Dentists typically advise patients to brush them every night before bed; however, you can’t use traditional toothpaste. Instead, use a soft-bristled brush and a nonabrasive cleaner designed just for dentures. If you use an adhesive, clean the grooves where it is applied as well.

3. Soak Them When Not in Use

When you’re not using them, they must be kept wet so they retain their shape. As such, you should soak them every night. Use a mild solution designed specifically for cleaning dentures while you sleep. Keep in mind that soaking is not a substitute for brushing, though.

Along with following the above tips, visiting your dentist regularly will protect both your dentures and overall oral health.
