As spring continues to blossom, your HVAC system will soon be asked to take on a heavy load. Fortunately, you can help it avoid working overtime. There are a number of easy ways to increase the mileage of your AC system, all at minimal effort. Consider these five tips to streamline your system’s efficiency.

5 Tips for Keeping Your Air Conditioning Running Efficiently

1. Clean the External Unit

One of the easiest ways to improve the performance of your HVAC system is to clear out any debris from your external unit. The external unit is just as important to your air conditioning as any of the internal equipment, so make sure to keep it clean—head outside and brush away any branches, twigs, and leaves left over from winter and spring rains.

2. Use a Dehumidifier

Although it may seem like a small step, using a dehumidifier will help increase the overall efficiency of your air conditioning system. Since humidity amplifies the effect of heat, a dehumidifier will allow you to raise the temperature of the air conditioning system, allowing it to do less work at the same level of comfort.

3. Keep Curtains Closed During the Day

HVACSince the sun can heat up the home, especially during the height of summer, it’s important to keep your curtains, blinds, or drapes closed to block out the rays that beat down on your home. By keeping windows covered throughout the day, your HVAC will get a much-needed break.

4. Use Your Thermostat Proactively

Strategically increasing and decreasing the temperature on your thermostat can be an easy way to keep your AC costs low and your system efficient. Bump up the temperature on your thermostat while you’re not home. This is especially easy to do with a programmable thermostat, which lets you increase and decrease temperatures at designated times.

5. Insulate Exposed Ductwork

Finally, be sure to thoroughly insulate any ductwork in your home, as leaky ducts can cause air to escape out of the AC system without having any effect on your home. This means your system will be working harder—and you’ll be paying more—for nothing. Fixing leaky ductwork is a relatively painless process and can have a tremendous impact on the efficiency of your HVAC.
