To avoid air conditioning malfunctions during summer, take care of system maintenance in spring. Addressing any issues now will ensure the system performs during heatwaves when you need it most—without draining excess energy in the process. Here are a few home comfort tasks to prioritize before your system takes center stage.

3 Items to Add to the Spring AC Maintenance Checklist

1. Clean Outdoor Components

After snow and ice melt, you might find the yard covered in dead leaves and broken branches. When cleaning up the property this spring, don’t forget to remove debris near and on the air conditioning system’s outdoor condenser unit. Dirt, leaves, and twigs can cling to the compressor, fan, and additional components, restricting airflow and causing additional performance problems.

2. Schedule a Tuneup

Some air conditioning inefficiencies are too subtle to notice without proper training, so schedule a professional HVAC system tuneup before summer starts. A technician will assess the condition of the entire system, change air filters, clean and disinfect condensate drains and additional components, check safety controls and electrical connections, repair refrigerant leaks, and provide additional services to enhance system performance and efficiency throughout the cooling season.

3. Upgrade to a Programmable Thermostat

Install a programmable thermostat to raise the temperature a few degrees when no one’s home and having your home cool again in time for your return. This alleviates strain on equipment, causing it to drain less energy.
