When done correctly by a board-certified surgeon, plastic surgery procedures can be a safe and effective way to achieve the more youthful appearance you’ve been looking for. Plastic surgeon David K. Hiranaka, MD, DMD, is a Harvard Medical School graduate who has been practicing in the Kailua Kona, Hawaii area since 1994. Today, he’s answering questions about a face lift procedure that can turn back the clock on your appearance without leaving a mark: endoscopic forehead surgery.

What exactly is endoscopic forehead surgery?

Endoscopic forehead surgery is a surgical procedure during which the doctor lifts the forehead or brows, removing lines and wrinkles in the face and leaving the patient with a younger-looking appearance.

What will happen during the surgery?

On the day of the actual procedure, your doctor will administer a general anesthesia: you’ll be asleep the whole time and you won’t feel a thing. Then, they will make an incision across your head, spanning from ear to ear. Advancements in cutting-edge technology have created special surgical instruments that make this incision a lot less invasive than it sounds. After the incision has been made, the brow and forehead are raised, any excess skin is removed, and the doctor will close the skin with sutures.

How long will it take me to heal after surgery?

Thanks to medical advancements, patients are able to resume their normal lives about a week or two after the procedure. You’ll likely need to take antibiotics to prevent infection, and you may experience some bruising and swelling, but this will go down in a few weeks. Your doctor will remove the sutures after about a week, and check to make sure that everything is healing correctly. It’s usually recommended that women refrain from wearing makeup, especially around their eyes, for a couple of weeks after surgery.

Will my insurance cover the procedure?

You’ll need to speak with your individual insurance provider about this, but if you need the surgery because of a visual impairment, insurance companies are usually willing to cover at least part of the cost of the procedure.
