Mulch can be an incredible asset in your yard. Not only does it create a neat, attractive landscape, but it also protects soil and the plants and trees it surrounds by locking in moisture against the heat of the sun and guarding against erosion and pests. To ensure you are getting the most out of this landscaping material, below is some information to keep in mind.

When Should You Mulch?

It is best to let the soil warm up a bit after a long winter before adding a fresh layer of mulch. Instead, start in mid to late spring so seedlings can burrow deep enough for optimal growth and then add more as the year progresses.

How Much Mulch Is Necessary?

Experts in landscaping materials agree that three inches of mulch works best for most areas. If you use pea gravel mulch or an inorganic option, you will only need about two inches. Also, smaller beds of herbs will not need as much as a lush garden of tall flowers or trees. Always taper off your mulch as you approach the edges of the area and make sure you don’t pile it on too heavily near delicate roots and stems, especially woodier plants.

What Maintenance Is Needed?

What Should You Do With Old Mulch?

It is best to remove old mulch from the previous year, even if it is plant-based and will decompose. Adding new over old may lead to compression that will inhibit water from hydrating your landscaping. Old mulch can also lead to rot and nutrient trouble for new growth. If the old mulch is organic and has no signs of disease or fungus, you can compost it. If there are signs of rot, throw it in the trash.
