Knowing when to replace your tires can keep you safe behind the wheel. The wheels not only move your vehicle, but they also create traction with the road to help prevent sliding and skidding. Tires typically last six to eight years, depending on factors such as road conditions and driving habits, but below are a few signs you’ll need to replace them sooner.

4 Indicators of Worn-Out Tires

1. Sidewall Damages

Blisters, bubbles, and bulges can emerge on sidewalls when the rubber’s outer layer deteriorates, increasing the risk of blowouts. Inspect your sidewalls at least once a month to avoid this dangerous problem. Look for cracks and cuts in the sidewalls as well, as they can indicate a slow air leak or an impending blowout.

2. Lack of Tread

tiresAs the tread wears down from frequent use, the rubber cannot grip the road as well. Front tires wear out faster because they do more turning, so get yours rotated about every six months to promote more even wear and longer life spans. Refrain from aggressive driving and frequent braking to prolong tread life. Use the quarter test to determine tread depth and get yours replaced before they become hazardous. Many new tires come with wear indicators, or flat rubber bars perpendicular to the tread, which start appearing as the rubber wears down.

3. Extreme Heat & Cold

During winter, tire pressure drops, resulting in underinflation. Underinflated tires heat up quickly compared to those kept at the manufacturer-recommended pressure, causing the rubber to deteriorate at a faster rate. Driving around on underinflated tires in serious heat for extended periods hastens this deterioration. Use the pressure gauge tool to check the pressure about once a month, especially during extreme weather, to keep them properly inflated.

4. Vibrations

While vibrations can indicate worn shock absorbers and wheel misalignments, they can also signal internal problems such as those from faulty manufacturing or old age. Vibrating tires also wear out faster, so visit the shop to identify the specific cause.
