With spring in full swing, perfect boating weather is right around the corner. If you’re heading out on the lake this season, now is an ideal time to replace worn-out boat parts, top off the fluids, and get your vessel prepared for the warm weather ahead. The tips below will ensure your boat is ready for that first spring voyage.

4 Tips for Dewinterizing Your Boat

1. Check the Battery

Ohio’s bitter cold winters can drain the life out of the battery, so pour in fresh distilled water and check the voltage. If it still holds a charge, disconnect the wires and scrub any corrosion off the charge posts. If the battery doesn’t come to life, visit a boat parts store for a replacement.

2. Run an Electronics Test

3. Change the Oil

Clean, fresh oil is crucial for extending the life of your engine. If you didn’t change the lubricant before storing your boat for the winter, now is a perfect time. Also, be on the lookout for signs of leaks or damaged gaskets.

4. Get the Coolant System Ready

To keep corrosion out of your coolant system, start each season with fresh antifreeze. Drain the tank and refill it with a 50/50 mix of coolant and water, then inspect all the hoses and connections for cracks or signs of dry rot.
