Right before an exciting trip, you’re probably more consumed with your journey than the home you’re leaving behind. However, ensure the most important aspects of your property are in excellent condition for your return, such as your HVAC system. Use the following tips to prevent the need for air conditioning repair later.

What to Do With Your Air Conditioner Before Going on Vacation

1. Leave It On

While you may be tempted to turn off your HVAC system before heading out of town, most air conditioning repair technicians urge homeowners to leave them running. Without the system regulating humidity and condensation, you could come home to buckling wood floors, curling wallpaper, and warped door frames. You could also endanger antique furniture; musical instruments; and old photos, books, or files by leaving them subject to extreme heat and humidity. Plus, your air conditioner is used to running around the clock, and a sudden period of dormancy could cause issues when you try to power it back on. To save money in warmer weather, raise the temperature on your thermostat — don’t shut it off.

2. Swap Out Air Filtersair conditioner repair

In your HVAC system, filters act as powerful catch-alls for solid, airborne particles like dust, dirt, and pollen. Over time, these substances accumulate in the screens, and they need to be replaced or washed to continue functioning properly. Before you leave town, make sure your air filters are clean and ready to trap allergens while you’re away. Otherwise, you may come home to these irritants in the air. A clogged filter can also inhibit air flow through your ductwork, straining the HVAC system and warranting air conditioning repairs.

3. Check the Outdoor Unit

Both central HVAC systems and ductless mini-split systems feature an outdoor unit. You probably recognize the outdoor compressor as the metal box near the back or side of your house. When it operates, you can hear it whirring and sucking in fresh air. To ensure the compressor has enough breathing room, clear at least a foot of space around it on all sides — you may have to trim back branches or move gardening equipment. Also, make sure there are no objects lying around your landscape that could become airborne in a storm and strike the unit.
