To remove a carpet stain before it sets, you might grab whatever cleaning products are available and start scrubbing. This could cause the spill to spread, making the spot larger and even harder to remove. To salvage your flooring, below are a few common carpet stains and the best methods to treat each one.

A Brief Guide to Carpet Stain Removal

1. Remove Pet Urine With White Vinegar & Water

Although housebreaking your pets will prevent frequent accidents, they still might urinate on the carpet from time to time. If you see a spot, blot the excess moisture with a dry towel. When the stain is mostly dry, spray a solution of one part white vinegar and one part water on it. The acidic vinegar neutralizes the ammonia in pet urine and has deodorizing properties to eliminate the scent. Let the solution soak into the fibers for a few minutes, then blot it with a towel to absorb the residue. The pungent vinegar smell will go away as it dries.

2. Use Mild Detergent on Beverage Stains

carpetIf you spill wine, coffee, or another beverage on the floor, use mild dishwashing liquid to treat the accident. A solution of a ¼ cup of detergent and a cup of warm water will cut through the grime. After the cleanser sets for a few minutes, blot the area with a dry towel or sponge. Resist the urge to scrub, as you could fray carpet fibers and drive the stain in deeper. Use one part white vinegar and one part water to remove the remaining detergent and blot the area again until it’s damp. This will rinse away any leftover detergent that could make the area sticky.

3. Dissolve Ink Stains With Isopropyl Alcohol

If ink makes it onto your carpets, you’ll need a stronger solution than white vinegar and water. To eliminate the blemish, dab it with a clean rag soaked in isopropyl alcohol. Blot the area until the ink is gone and then let it air-dry. If you don’t have isopropyl alcohol on hand, the acetone in nail polish remover should dissolve the ink.
