Now that spring has arrived, it’ll soon be time to fire up your AC unit for the first time of the year. After sitting dormant all winter, it will need some tuning up. There are a few essential preparations to make to ensure it runs optimally. Before you set it on full force, here’s what you should do.

How to Prepare the AC Unit for the Spring & Summer

1. Test the Thermostat & System

You want to make sure the thermostat and system are communicating properly. When you turn it on for the first time, set the thermostat to a cool setting. If you notice that it’s taking longer than expected to reach the desired temperature or you’re not getting cool air, the condenser might be blocked or evaporator could be dirty. Don’t wait to fix these; summer is the busy season for HVAC contractors, and you might end up on a waiting list. If your thermostat is on the fritz, consider upgrading to a smart thermostat for superior climate control and increased energy savings.

2. Change the Air Filters

When they become clogged, the AC unit has a harder time pushing cool air through. It then has to work harder to achieve the desired temperatures. This leads to a less comfortable home, higher utility bills, and strain on your system. Swap out your air filters and make a habit of checking them each month. For even better results, consider scheduling a duct cleaning.

3. Schedule a Tuneup

There’s only so much you can do if you’re not an HVAC technician, so schedule an inspection with a professional. They’ll take a close look at all of the moving parts of your AC unit to determine if any repairs are needed. They can also clean your system and make adjustments so that it runs well throughout the season. This can lead to better cooling and savings throughout the warmer months and also extend the life span of your AC unit.
