Spring is finally here, and it’s time to get out of the house and enjoy the great outdoors. Being outside can have several health benefits, including boosting mood and immunity. Outdoor activities are also an excellent way to spend a day with family or peers in your senior living community. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

4 Outdoor Activities to Enjoy in Senior Living

1. Gardening

Gardening is an excellent hobby for people of all ages. You might enjoy it solo or with friends in your senior living community. Many facilities have community gardens for residents to tend, or you can start an indoor garden with herbs and other indoor plants such as orchids and succulents. Caring for a garden can allow you to beautify your room with fresh flowers or add home-grown ingredients to dishes. It can also have therapeutic benefits.

Walking is a great low-impact exercise that can help you maintain strength and agility. Going for walks in nature or around the grounds is particularly beneficial as it allows you to soak up vitamin D and get fresh air. Like gardening, walking in nature can have mental health benefits.

3. Reading Outdoors

Reading can boost brain health and improve memory. Many senior living centers have book clubs, which can provide a social opportunity as well. Whether you’re part of a discussion group or reading solo, consider taking your book outside when the weather permits. This will allow you to soak up the sun while enjoying your reading. Wear proper sun protection during the morning and afternoon; use a minimum of 30 SPF, and wear a sun hat to shield your face from UV rays.

4. Bird Watching

Birds are fascinating creatures, and during the spring and summer, in particular, you’re likely to see many species around your senior living community grounds and surrounding neighborhood. Bird-watching can be a solo or group activity enjoyed with visiting family or friends in your retirement community. Research the kinds of birds you can expect to find in your area, and take photos and notes on those you encounter on your excursions.
