While the decision to say goodbye to a beloved pet is never an easy choice, it can be the most humane and loving option for taking away your pet's pain and honoring the important role they've played in your life. In-home pet euthanasia allows you to spend the final moments in the comforting environment of home and family. Here is what you should expect from the process.

Prior to the Procedure

Before the administering of any medications begins, you will have an opportunity to ask questions or address concerns with the staff in attendance. In-home pet euthanasia technicians understand how difficult this experience is, and their aim is to ensure you are informed and at ease with the process about to take place. Don't hesitate to share your thoughts and feelings or state any preferences for how you'd like the procedure to be carried out.

Sedation

in-home pet euthanasiaThe pet is sedated first so that they are comfortably sleeping for the rest of the procedure. The sedation is typically given via an intermuscular injection, and this is the only part of the entire process that can sometimes create some minor discomfort for your pet. But it is short-lived, and as soon as the injection is done and the needle removed, the pain will have subsided. Your pet will gently and easily fall asleep. You can choose to have your pet on a favorite chair, their bed, wrapped in a favorite blanket, or cradled in your arms—anywhere they will be surrounded by the most love.

Euthanasia

Once the attending staff has verified that the pet is in a deep sleep, the euthanasia solution will be injected. This is usually done via an IV injection they will not feel. Within one minute of starting the solution, the pet will peacefully pass away. The staff will then check the animal for signs of a heartbeat and confirm the death. You will know that you provided your companion with the most peaceful and loving goodbye possible.
