Losing baby teeth is a milestone in a child's life that is as much about growing up as it is about dental care. But with every loose tooth comes new sensations that can be uncomfortable. Here are a few do’s and don'ts to better help your child with the experience of a loose tooth.

Do:

Let the tooth fall out naturally.

A wiggly tooth can be annoying for a child and make everyday tasks like eating and speaking difficult. But resist the urge to yank the tooth out, which can cause significant pain, bleeding, and inflammation. Instead, let it fall out on its own.

Encourage your child.

While a loose tooth should never be pulled before it's ready to come out, you can still encourage your child to wiggle it with their tongue and help the natural process along. Most kids will do this anyway out of curiosity. In most cases, the more they wiggle the tooth, the looser it will become.

Don't:

Stop brushing.

Help your child gently brush the tooth, which can further loosen it, as well as the surrounding teeth. Have your child practice the usual dental care regimen of brushing and flossing twice a day. A soft-bristled toothbrush with a small head is ideal for a little mouth.

Forget to prepare your child.

If this is your child's first loose tooth, the sensation of it falling out and the immediate aftermath are going to be new and perhaps frightening. Prepare them by explaining what's going to happen. Tell them that a little discomfort and bleeding may occur, but it's perfectly normal. Answer their questions honestly, and, of course, mention the Tooth Fairy and all the perks that come with her visits.
