Orthopedics is the branch of medicine devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions, disorders, and injuries. Orthopedic doctors treat a wide range of issues, ranging from arthritis and bursitis to broken bones and joint replacements. The following answers to common questions on this vast subject will help you better understand how orthopedic medicine can benefit you.

Answers to Common Questions About Orthopedics

What is arthritis?

Arthritis is an inflammation of the joints. It is an often painful condition that affects around 54 million Americans. The term arthritis encompasses more than 100 rheumatic disorders and similar conditions. Symptoms of arthritis include stiff, sore, or swollen joints.

What’s the difference between a sprain and fracture?

A sprain is another word for a torn or stretched ligament: an injury to the bands of connective tissue that hold a joint together. Sprains typically cause swelling and significant pain but can be healed with orthopedic treatment and rest. A fracture, on the other hand, is a broken bone. The bone is positioned back in place and held there with a cast or splint; over time, the bone grows back together.

Is it better to put ice or heat on a musculoskeletal injury?

orthopedicsIce is generally most helpful when applied during the first 24 to 48 hours following an injury. It helps reduce swelling and pain by decreasing blood flow to the afflicted area. Always put ice indirectly on an injury— for instance, put a towel or cloth in between the skin and the icepack — for no more than 20 minutes at a time. Remove the ice for 20 minutes and apply again for 20 more minutes if necessary. Heat increases the flow of blood and is more effective once swelling and inflammation begin to lessen.

What is arthroscopic surgery?

Arthroscopic surgery is a common orthopedic procedure that diagnoses and repairs joint issues. A tiny camera is inserted into the joint, allowing the doctor to inspect the affected area and the severity of the issue, while deciding which treatment options are most appropriate.
