Turn off all lights, appliances and electronics not in use
Unplug all appliances and tools when not in use to save energy in your home. According to the Energy Information Institute, the average U.S. household spends about $2,000 a year on electricity, and about 10 percent of that, or $200, is spent paying for electricity you’re not even using. During the daytime you should also use the natural light to keep your home lit, try to avoid turning on lights if possible.

Don’t waste water
Taking a four-minute shower instead of an eight minute shower could also save almost 10 gallons of water! If you can’t sacrifice that, replacing your water faucets with aerated ones will use less water without sacrificing pressure, and the cheap price of a low-flow shower head will repay itself in no time with the money it could save you in bills.

Lower the temperature of your water heater
Water heating is typically a home’s third largest energy expense. Lowering the temperature setting from 140 degrees to 120 degrees Fahrenheit saves money and still gets the water plenty hot. If you’re going to be away for days, drop the setting even more to save more energy and money.

Use energy efficient light bulbs
Replace lightbulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs. You can reduce energy use from about a third to as much as 80% with today’s increasing number of energy efficient halogen incandescents, compact fluorescents and LED lights.

Replace home air filters
Keep your air conditioning system in top shape by replacing filters to reduce inefficiency and save energy. Another cooling tips is to make sure vents are not blocked by furniture, carpeting or drapes to ensure your home is cooled efficiently to save money and energy.

Use a ceiling fan

When using air conditioning, a ceiling fan will allow you to raise the thermostat setting about 4°F with no reduction in comfort. Just make sure to turn it off when you leave the room, fans cool people, not rooms.

Maintain your air conditioner
Have a professional HVAC technician check your AC unit and make sure it’s running smoothly and not expending excess energy. It’s best to schedule air conditioning maintenance in the spring to ensure you’re kept cool and comfortable all summer long. Living in a hot climate, your cooling costs can be significant, around 70% of your electricity bill. Start saving energy today and sign up for our Annual Preventative Maintenance Agreement!
