Root canal therapy is one of the most misunderstood dental health procedures. There is, for example, minimal discomfort involved. If you want to further ease your nerves and ensure you follow the best aftercare practices, here’s what your dentist wants you to know.

Your Guide to Root Canal Therapy

Before

The dentist will first diagnose the root canal infection. They’ll go over common side effects, including sensitivity, toothaches, and swelling. They may also take some X-rays to get a better look at your tooth. Depending on the state of your mouth, they may perform a cleaning. Should they prefer, they will refer you to an endodontist in or outside their practice if they don’t personally offer root canal therapy.

They’ll then prep the area and drill through the crown of the tooth to reach the pulp chamber. Once there, they’ll clear the infected pulp and clean the root canals. The dentists will then seal the cavity and place a crown on top of the tooth. This can take one or two sessions depending on the extent of the infection and the crown fitting.

After

There will be some discomfort following the root canal procedure. Your dentist will likely prescribe a pain killer and advise plenty of rest. If possible, take a few days off work. Stick with soft foods and liquids at first, and be careful not to chew around the repaired tooth. Avoid hot and cold beverages as well, as there may be some sensitivity. If you experience bleeding or extensive swelling near the surgical site, alert your dentist so they can make any adjustments.
