Your toilet gets daily use and rarely has problems, in part because designs have been improving every year for many decades. However, you shouldn't push your luck. To avoid a clog or backflow and the cost of emergency plumber service, never flush the following items down your toilet.

What Not to Flush Down the Toilet

1. Cooking Grease

Some people know not to pour grease down the sink, but the toilet isn’t a better option. While hamburger fat, shortening, and other types of cooking grease turn liquid under heat, once they cool, they return to a semi-solid form that combines with other debris to form a glutenous mess that can easily clog your pipes. Plumbers recommend waiting until they harden and then discarding them in the trash.

2. Fish

plumberFor many people, it is a tradition to give their pet goldfish a burial at sea after they find one floating upside down at the top of the bowl. However, flushing them can lead to clogged drains, even if the fish are relatively small. Worse, if it is not dead, the fish can survive the journey to the sewer, where—free of the confines of its bowl—it can grow to inordinate size, threaten native species, and even transmit disease.

3. Wet Wipes

Baby wipes and adult wet wipes do not deteriorate the same way toilet paper does. Even the brands that call themselves “flushable" aren’t always, so, for safety’s sake, throw them in the trash.
