If your child is complaining of foot pain, there are several potential causes. Kids are growing and developing, and some “growing pains” are a natural and harmless side effect. However, other issues could be at play. It’s essential to understand the potential causes of pain to help your child find relief. Here’s what you need to know.

4 Common Causes of Foot Pain

1. Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails occur when the toenail grows abnormally into the skin. It’s most common in the big toe and can result in pain and infection. Tight-fitting shoes typically cause the condition. Kids and teens may wear shoes that are too small if they haven’t had a chance to size up after a growth spurt. Trimming the nails too short can also cause this issue.

2. Flat Feet

Those with flexible flat feet typically don’t experience any issues, while those with rigid flat feet are more susceptible to discomfort as the ligaments are tight, causing muscle stiffness. A podiatrist may recommend special shoe inserts or shoes with arch support to reduce pain.

3. Plantar Warts

Plantar warts are skin lesions on the sole. They look similar to corns and calluses but have distinguishing tiny black dots. Caused by a virus, they are most common in kids and teens, possibly because adults have developed immunity. They typically occur on the sole, although they can also occur on the toes or heel. If the warts change color or appearance, bleed, or don’t respond to treatment, or your child has other health issues such as diabetes or immunodeficiency, see a doctor. Otherwise, plantar warts usually clear up with over-the-counter medication.

4. Heel Pain

Foot pain in the heel may be caused by plantar fasciitis or inflammation of the heel bone where the plantar fascia attaches. It is often associated with heel spurs or calcium deposits that develop between the heel and arch of the foot. Those that occur at the back of the foot are often associated with an inflamed Achilles tendon. This can also occur as a result of Sever’s disease caused by strain on the Achilles tendon.
