The idea of dressing up for church may bring to mind stuffy suits and long dresses. However, church dress codes have changed a lot over the last couple of decades. Today you might save your traditional “Sunday best” for major holidays like Easter or Christmas and adopt a more casual look for weekly services. If you’re reattending church for the first time in a while or plan to visit with a friend, use the tips below to pick your outfit.

How to Dress for a Church Service

Women

As a rule of thumb, clothes that might be considered revealing should be avoided, since they could draw attention and disapproving looks from the rest of the congregation. Think subdued colors, covered shoulders, and simple jewelry. If you’re wearing a skirt, it should end at the knee or lower. If it’s not something you would wear to an interview, it’s probably better left at home.

Men

churchWhile suit coats and ties were once the norm, men are now generally expected to wear casual or business casual outfits to church. Try pressed dress slacks and a button-down shirt, or opt for khakis and a polo during warmer weather. Shorts are generally seen as too casual. Dress shoes or loafers are acceptable, but sneakers should be avoided in most cases. Also be aware that some churches don’t permit men to wear hats during prayer or services.

Children

Dress expectations for children are more relaxed, but you should still apply certain standards to the way your children dress at church. If they’re old enough to dress themselves, assess their outfit before you head out the door to ensure it’s clean and respectful. For younger children, it may be helpful to select an outfit the night before to avoid any tantrums the morning before the service.
