If your child is getting ready to start school later this year, you likely have a lot on your plate. In addition to purchasing school supplies and marking vacation days on your calendar, you’ll have to make sure your little one’s vaccinations are up to date. Here are the immunizations your child should get at a medical clinic before starting school this fall.

6 Vaccinations Your Child Needs Before Starting School

1. Polio

The polio vaccine is administered in four doses at a medical clinic. Your child should receive each dose before they turn 6. This vaccination protects against polio, which is highly infectious and affects the brain and spinal cord.

2. Hepatitis B

3. Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis (DTaP)

The DTaP vaccine is first administered during infancy, but it requires a booster every 10 years to stay effective. The immunization prevents diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis, which can all be deadly if untreated.

4. Varicella

The first dose of this vaccine has to be received on or after a child’s first birthday. The second dose should be administered at a medical clinic when a child is between 4 and 6 years old. The varicella vaccine protects against chickenpox, which can be life-threatening in babies and people with weakened immune systems.

5. Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR)

The MMR vaccine is first administered at a medical clinic when a child is between 12 and 15 months, and it is given again when a child is between 4 and 6 years old. This immunization protects against three life-threatening diseases: measles, mumps, and rubella.

6. Meningococcal

The meningococcal is recommended for children 11 to 12 years old and a booster dose at 16 years old. It protects against meningococcal disease, a serious infection that affects the brain and spinal cord.
