Since the goal of daily dental care is to keep your teeth in excellent condition, you might be confused if your team of dentists recommends an extraction. However, there are instances when removing the tooth and replacing it with an implant is a better option than trying to preserve it. Here are three reasons dentists sometimes recommend extraction.

When Is Extraction Recommended?

1. Severe Tooth Decay

dentistsOral bacteria can produce acid that can dissolve away dental enamel, leaving the underlying dentin susceptible to decay. While small areas of erosion produce more than a cavity, unchecked cavities can allow bacteria to travel deep into the tooth where it can infect the interior pulp chamber, causing discomfort. To keep the infection from spreading, dentists may recommend a tooth extraction.

2. Crowding

Dental extractions may also be recommended if teeth are crowding out healthy teeth. For instance, if you develop wisdom teeth, they may be extracted so they don’t interfere with the placement of your other teeth. Extractions are also necessary if teeth don’t erupt properly and become impacted when they start to come in.

3. Significant Physical Damage

While small dental chips are usually mainly cosmetic, larger fractures could expose the deeper structures of the teeth to significant damage. For instance, cracks that extend beyond the gum line could introduce bacteria deep into the jaw, where it can cause problems. To check for underlying damage, dentists may take X-rays of your smile to see how big of a problem the damage is.
