Few events are more exciting in life than when you buy a house, but with so much to do before you move in, it’s easy to become overwhelmed. Fortunately, some careful preparation can help put you on the right track and alleviate a great deal of stress. Since moving is a big task to deal with, it’s wise not to wait until the last minute to get organized and set a plan. Taking the following questions into account can make the difference between a smooth relocation and a frustrating ordeal.

Important Considerations When Planning a Move

Who needs your change of address?

Avoid any delays in getting your mail once you move by submitting a change of address form to the post office. You can provide a specific date to begin forwarding the mail. It’s also a good idea to personally call and make the update with your insurance carriers, utility companies, bank, credit card companies, subscription services, doctors’ offices, and the DMV.

What packing supplies do you need?

buy a houseTo ensure you have everything properly packed before moving day, you must determine what packing supplies you need. Valuable items should be transported in boxes that are well-insulated to provide the most protection against damage. You will also want to use packing paper instead of newspaper to prevent staining your belongings. It’s best to cover fragile items in protective wrap in boxes to keep items from shifting. Make sure you have boxes in a variety of sizes to accommodate all of your possessions.

When should you transfer utilities?

You don’t want to wait until it’s time to move to set up all of the utilities at your new residence. Most companies will allow you to schedule a start date in advance, so everything is up and running on the day you move in. When you buy a house, you will typically need to transfer gas, electricity, water, sewer, and trash removal services into your name.

How early should you hire movers?

Ideally, you should start researching and getting quotes from moving services soon after you buy a house. The most reputable companies book up quickly during busy moving seasons. If possible, you will want to hire movers at least one to two months ahead of your move-in date. This will give you both plenty of time to prepare and increase your chances of getting to work with your first choice.
