Cars have come a long way over the decades. While you still need to monitor strange sounds and visible issues like leaking under the car, in many cases your car will let you know when something is wrong. Dashboard lights, for example, indicate when it’s time to fuel up and when the brights are on. Though many dashboard lights aren’t urgent, some require immediate action to stave off costly auto repairs.

3 Important Dashboard Lights to Watch for

1. Tire Pressure Warning Light

Though it may look different depending on your car, the tire pressure warning light usually looks like a horseshoe with an exclamation point in the center. This indicates inadequate inflation of your tires, which affects how your car handles and can impact gas mileage. Most importantly, it can lead to an accident on the road. Pull over when you see this light and check the air pressure in your tires. If the light persists, get your car to the shop to determine if it’s your monitoring sensor or your tires.

2. Check Engine Light

Auto RepairThe check engine light looks like a small engine. A steady light requires attention but is not necessarily urgent. It may, for example, be caused by a loose gas cap. Meanwhile, a flashing light indicates an emergency. If it’s accompanied by strange noises and difficulty steering, pull over and call a tow truck to avoid further damage and unnecessary auto repairs.

3. Engine Oil Light

If you see this light pop up on your dashboard, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re low on oil. This light usually appears in the shape of an oil can and may indicate issues with your oil filter or pump. Pull over and pop the hood over your car to check your oil levels. If the dipstick is dry, call a tow truck for an overdue oil change.
