Take charge of your health – get your cholesterol & Vitamin D checked at Island Hospital!

1. Why should I get health screenings?

Health screenings are medical tests that identify early signs of health issues. These tests help doctors check for diseases and health conditions before there are symptoms, and when they are easiest to treat. Factors such as age, health, family history and lifestyle choices indicate how often you should get screenings and we make it easy and convenient to get checked with free or low-cost health screenings. Don’t ignore early warning signs – screening tests at Island Hospital are one important thing you can do to maintain your health!

On April 30, you can get your cholesterol checked for $15 and Vitamin D for $40.

2. What is cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a waxy substance that is found naturally in your blood and your body uses it to do important functions. Certain factors such as diet, lifestyle choices and heredity can cause too much cholesterol, which can build up inside your blood vessels and make it hard for blood to flow through. Over time, this can lead to heart disease, heart attack or stroke. The great news is, it’s easy to get your cholesterol checked! Island Hospital offers a lipid-panel screening that can monitor abnormalities in cholesterol and triglycerides. If your cholesterol is high, you can begin taking steps to lower it.

3. What’s the importance of Vitamin D?

Vitamin D is a hormone produced by your body that is crucial for your overall health. Vitamin D is essential for proper absorption of calcium to maintain strong bones, fight infections, and to keep your muscles, lungs and heart healthy. Your body produces Vitamin D on its own when exposed to sunlight, but you can also absorb it through food and supplements. There are many adverse health effects if you are deficient, which includes persistent tiredness, body aches and pains, bone and muscle weakness and stress. It is important that you regularly screen your Vitamin D levels so you can treat symptoms that are not always obvious but can have significant health effects.

Island Hospital will be hosting this health-screening event on
Tuesday, April 30 from 8-11 a.m. in the Health Resource Center.
