Lint refers to the excess fibers that fall off fabrics and collect on the garment; they can form in the laundromat dryer or mix with debris and form lint balls on your clothing. When lint clings to your clothing, the outfit can make a poor impression. If you’re having trouble with removal, consider a few of the tips below.

3 Tips for Removing Lint

1. Use a Lint Roller

laundromatA lint roller is a cardboard or plastic device with a roll of adhesive paper. It’s used to roll over an article of clothing to remove lint, hair, and dust. Move in a single direction for effective results. If you don’t want to purchase a lint roller or need a makeshift device in a bind, use masking tape instead.

Don’t use a lint roller on sensitive fabrics, such as silk and cashmere or clothes with loose threads and embellishments, as the adhesive can undo intricate sewing and rip off lightly-sewed buttons. Instead, take the garment to a laundromat for a safe dry-cleaning option.

2. Rub With a Dryer Sheet

Dryer sheets are designed to remove the static from clothing that causes more lint to cling to the fabric. But aside from throwing them in the dryer, you can also rub a dryer sheet over a piece of clothing with lint to remove the threads and hair. This method is effective on fabric with heavy embroidery, sequins, lace, and intricate patchwork.

3. Dry on an Air-Only Cycle

If lint is sprinkled across your garments—especially black and dark-colored pieces—after taking them out of the washing machine, switch the laundromat dryer cycle to air only, or fluff. This cycle lightly tumbles clothes without heat, removing hair and lint along the way. This method is ideal for wool, cashmere, and suede.
