The American flag may be one of the most recognizable symbols in the world. With its crisp shapes and signature color palette, it’s iconic and easy to pick out over other flags. However, despite this visual simplicity, it has a rich and fascinating history. Here are some facts about the flag that may surprise you.

5 Facts You May Not Know About the American Flag

1. 1777 Origins

Aside from different star configurations, the basic flag design can be traced back to just one year after the Declaration of Independence was signed. At the time, there were only 13 stars in the blue box, or the field, representing each of the original 13 colonies. They were grouped in a circular arrangement.

2. Stripe Limitations

However, in 1818, they predicted that this would be untenable and reverted back to the original 13 stripes. The flag with 15 stars and 15 stripes is also known as the Star Spangled Banner.

3. Color Significance

Although they were not assigned to the American flag at the time, the colors now share the same meanings as they do on the Great Seal of the United States. According to Charles Thomson, the Secretary of the Continental Congress at the time, “White signifies purity and innocence. Red, hardiness and valor, and Blue signifies vigilance, perseverance & justice.”

4. Repairs Are Permitted

If a flag’s material is in good condition, it can be cleaned, either by washing it or taking it to the dry cleaner. Minor holes or tears can be repaired, but once the fly end is damaged too far into the flag and it loses proper dimensions, it should be replaced.

5. There Are 6 American Flags Planted on the Moon

Many people know that Neil Armstrong put up the first US flag on the moon in 1969 during the Apollo 11 mission. However, what they may not be aware of is that 5 of the subsequent Apollo missions also included more flag-planting. The last one was placed in 1972, during Apollo 17. Unfortunately, due to excessive UV radiation, dramatic temperature fluctuations, and age, it’s unlikely anything resembling the flag remains.
