Water leaks—even small ones—require immediate attention to avoid damage and costly water bills. If they go unnoticed for weeks or even days at a time, you could be looking at expensive plumbing repairs. Here’s how to tell if you should reach out to a plumber.

How to Tell if You Have a Water Leak

1. Water Damage

Look for water spots on floors, ceilings, and walls. If a roof leak is ruled out, this could mean water is dripping from old or outdated piping. These stains often appear in puddle-like shapes with a brownish ring around the edges and can cause peeling and warping. A plumber can replace the aging piping to stop the spread of mold-inducing moisture that can lead to expensive interior repairs.

2. Moisture Under the Sink

plumbingRoutinely inspect the exposed joints and pipes under your sink for visible signs of moisture. If you feel water as you run your hand over the plumbing or notice water stains on the wood cabinetry directly underneath the pipe, call a plumber. In the meantime, place a bowl under the sink to collect the water. If the leak is severe, turn off the valve.

3. High Water Bills

The average family pays between $34 and $70 for water each month. If your water bills suddenly seem higher than normal without any evidence of water damage, you may have a leak in your water supply line. To determine if this is the case, shut off the water and observe the meter’s needle. This can be found either below your kitchen sink or under a metal or plastic cover near the side of your home. If the dial continues to move, call a plumbing expert to find and repair the leak.
