As much as we might not like to admit it, the older we get, the more we can have problems with our mobility. This means that even a senior living a very active life may have trouble with some tasks, like cleaning their house or apartment. With this in mind, the following guide offers advice for making these chores more manageable.

Do:

Utilize extension tools.

Use long-handled sweepers and dusters to get to hard-to-reach places rather than using a stepstool or ladder, which comes with a risk of a fall. “Grabber” tools that feature a claw on the end of a handle can pick up items you would otherwise have to stoop to get. This can be easier on sore knees or if you have back problems.

Rethink your kitchen.

Store canned goods and appliances on your counter rather than in the cupboards to minimize the amount of reaching and lifting you have to do. Choose light pots and pans, dishes, and glassware. Additionally, consider getting a rolling stand on which to place heavy pots or food dishes so you don’t have to carry them the length of the kitchen or to the dining room.

Don’t:

Use harsh cleaning products.

Corrosive cleaners contain lye or other chemicals that can harm the body if accidental contact is made. Many cleaning tasks can be done effectively with vinegar and water, and natural cleansers with little or no scent are easily available. Use rubber gloves to protect your skin and provide grip.

Assume you can do it all.

Even if you are still active, the body slows down with age. Ask for help from family or staff at your senior living facility for assistance with bigger jobs, such as carpet cleaning or rotating mattresses. Outsource certain tasks, like laundry or deep cleaning.
