In some cases, after a moving violation, accident, or traffic stop, you may be instructed by the Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles to submit an SR-22 form. The guide below explains what this high-risk insurance policy is and why you might need it.

What Is SR-22 Insurance?

Although it is commonly referred to simply as SR-22, it’s actually a bond or certificate you purchase from your insurance agency, along with your auto policy. The agency subsequently submits the SR-22 form to the state, certifying that you are compliant with Alaska's minimum auto insurance requirements. The purpose is to ensure that drivers comply with minimum coverage laws—especially those the state deems are likely to forego coverage, otherwise.

Why Might You Need an SR-22?

InsuranceAfter a serious moving violation like a DUI or reckless driving charge, your rates will likely increase dramatically. To prevent you from avoiding the increased expense and driving without coverage, the Division of Motor Vehicles may require you to file an SR-22 certifying you are compliant. The same may happen if you accumulate a large number of points on your license due to multiple, less serious infractions.

Finally, if you were stopped by an officer and unable to show proof of minimum coverage, you may subsequently be required to file the SR-22 to prove you have bought coverage. If you later drop your policy again, your agency will notify the state and you could be subject to fines and the loss of driving privileges.
