As the temperatures rise, it’s important to make sure that your car’s AC is fully functional; it can be difficult to be stuck with a broken air conditioner in the middle of the warm season. To prevent yourself from needing auto repairs, review the following AC maintenance tips.

How to Maintain Your Vehicle’s AC

1. Run the Air Conditioner Regularly

Run the system for at least 10 minutes every week, regardless of whether you need to use the car or not. Doing this will help keep the gas pressure in the AC normal, which, in turn, will help the entire system function better. When you run it, do so on the highest setting.

2. Run the Defrost

This will prevent mildew and mold from damaging the system and forcing you to get auto repairs. It will also prevent your car from having bad odors. Like the AC, run it for at least 10 minutes.

3. Clean the Air Filter

Another important element of caring for your air conditioner is cleaning the air filter; it is typically located behind the glove box. Clean it by shaking out any debris and running water through it. If you find any damage—such as a crack—visit an auto repair shop to replace the filter. Also, after cleaning it, make sure it’s dry before placing it back in the vehicle.
