Concrete driveways typically last for a very long time—around three decades. However, this number can vary depending on maintenance, climate, and usage. Instead of planning your replacement based on age alone, know the signs of deterioration. Any of the indicators below signal that it’s time to call your concrete contractors for a new driveway.

When to Replace Concrete Driveways

1. Potholes

Potholes are large pits or holes in the surface of concrete. They can be caused by corrosion from de-icing salt, natural sinking, or damage from heavy vehicles and bad storms. When left alone, they can damage your vehicle when you drive over it or absorb water that compromises the foundation below the concrete slabs. A pothole can never really be repaired, since a patch is only a temporary—and unattractive—measure.

As temperatures fluctuate, concrete expands and contracts. Over time, this can lead to cracks in the surface. Small cracks can be repaired, but longer and wider ones leave the material vulnerable to moisture. While there’s no rule of thumb for how long or wide is too large, your contractor can tell you based on the rest of its condition whether the crack can be repaired or if the driveway needs to be replaced.

3. Poor Drainage

Driveways are installed so that water flows safely off of them into the appropriate drainage system. As such, water should never pool on the surface. If it is, however, this likely means that portions of your driveway are sinking. Pooling water will only further weaken the surface, causing cracks and potholes.
