Misplacing the key to a file cabinet is a hassle. Whether you accidentally lost it at home or the office, you’ll likely need to call for a locksmith. Luckily, there are a few steps you can take to try to open the cabinet before requesting professional help.

3 Tips for Opening a Locked File Cabinet

1. Look for a Spare Key

Sometimes a matching key is kept within proximity of the filing cabinet for such an emergency. Check under the corner of the carpet or along the top of a door frame. Slide your hand across the top of the cabinets to ensure that it’s clear. If there doesn’t seem to be a key nearby, stop in at the receptionist’s desk, as they may have a copy. If the cabinet is at home, ask other household members if they happen to know if there’s a spare key available.

2. Gently Tilt the Unit

locksmithOlder models may have a way to manually lift the rod that’s holding the drawers in place. Have a coworker lend a hand and tilt the unit backward. Reach underneath and feel around for a hole along the right side of the cabinet. There should be a metal rod inside that you can push up to release the lock. Keep in mind safety when trying this technique. Cabinets are often heavy. Lifting them can cause strain and injury, and they can also cause harm if they accidentally fall over. Bend at your knees, not your back, and avoid twisting your body. If it’s too challenging, don’t attempt it; it’s not worth the risk, so call a locksmith instead or skip to step three below.

3. Contact the Manufacturer

Those who have extra time on their hands might want to consider calling the manufacturer of the filing cabinet. They should be able to send over a replacement key. You might have to supply the lock number to ensure that the correct match is made or pay a fee. Be aware that this may not be an option for older models if the manufacturer is defunct.
