Sensitive teeth can make it painful to eat, smile, or even open your mouth— anything that exposes the teeth to temperature fluctuations. Fortunately, understanding the causes of sensitivity will help you and your dentist identify ways to treat it and prevent the issue from worsening. Here are a few details to keep in mind.

Common Causes of Teeth Sensitivity & How to Treat It

1. Worn Enamel

Enamel is the protective top layer of a tooth. When it wears away, it exposes the more delicate layer of dentin underneath, leading to sensitivity. Enamel can erode due to tooth decay, aggressive brushing technique, or frequent consumption of highly acidic foods. To preserve enamel, brush your teeth at least twice a day using a soft-bristled toothbrush, and limit the amount of acidic foods — such as coffee, vinegar, and yogurt — you consume.

2. Gum Recession

dentistGums often recede as a result of periodontal disease, an infection or inflammation of the gum tissue. When gums start to pull away from a tooth, more of the root surface is exposed, and this produces sensitivity. To prevent gum disease, brush and floss at least twice daily and see a dentist every six months. If you have gum disease, visit your dentist for a deeper cleaning and a more targeted plan of treatment, such as root scaling and planing.

3. Teeth Grinding

Many people grind their teeth during sleep without even knowing it. Often, the effects are felt the next day. The excessive pressure exerted on the teeth from grinding and clenching erodes the enamel and exposes the dentin. A mouthguard is one of the best ways to prevent teeth grinding and reduce sensitivity.
