When is the last time you got an eye exam? If it’s been more than a year, you should consider scheduling an appointment with Comprehensive Eye Care, LTD. today. While the recommended schedule for check-ups depends on age, health and family medical history, regular eye exams are a crucial part of detecting and correcting vision problems when they’re most treatable. Here are some basic guidelines to determine when you and your family should go to the eye doctor:

  • Ages 5 and under. Children under the age of three should have their eyes checked by their pediatrician for common problems like lazy eye and crossed eyes. Kids older than three should have their first comprehensive eye exam before starting school.
  • Ages 5-18. All school children should visit the optometrist once every two years. If your family has a history of eye problems, or if your child has a particular condition, follow your doctor’s recommendations for exams.
  • Ages 18-40. If you’re a young to middle-aged adult, you only have to get an eye exam every five to ten years, unless noted otherwise by a doctor.
  • Ages 40-65. As you get older, it’s important to visit your optometrist every two to four years to prevent the onset of any eye disease that can get worse over time, such as cataracts.
  • Ages 65 and up. Once you retire, plan on making appointments with the optometrist office once every one to two years, or more frequently if you wear glasses, have a chronic disease or have a family history with eye problems.
