Drywall is one of the fastest and least expensive wall solutions. Resistant to mold and even fire, this type of pre-cast material can be used for garages, basements, and other areas of a home, but must be installed by a professional to avoid seams and sagging. If you’re preparing for an upcoming drywall project, you may be wondering about the installation process and what to expect. Here are some of the most common questions homeowners have about installing drywall.

Drywall Installation FAQs

How durable is drywall?

Drywall is composed of powdered gypsum, making it resistant to mold. Panels infused with glass fibers also maintain their structural integrity in extreme heat, which can help them resist fires. Since it isn’t made of wood, drywall is also resistant to termites and many other household pests.

How will drywall be hung?

Using a hammer to nail the panels to concrete can dent or break off pieces of sheetrock, so contractors tend to use nails to hold them up as they screw the drywall into the wall studs. The seams are then covered with flat tape and concealed under a layer of putty, which is sanded smooth after it dries.

Can I prevent dust?

drywallWhen contractors sand down the joint compound, they create a fine white dust that can accumulate on your floors. Using a low-dust joint compound can reduce the amount of powder in the air, but not eliminate it entirely. To keep your floors and surfaces clean, consider covering them with newspaper before your appointment and leaving windows open as they work.

What can damage my new drywall?

The gypsum powder in drywall absorbs moisture, so water leaks in the roof or walls can cause it to bulge and warp. The material is also fragile, and can be dented by sharp corners when moving furniture. Fortunately, imperfections can usually be filled with joint compound, then disappear with no trace after sanding and painting.
