Modern tires are more durable than ever, made to be resistant to heat and pressure. Still, they need correct care to stay in stellar shape and help you avoid the need for towing. A well-maintained tire improves your fuel efficiency, helps your steering and braking, and makes your car safer to drive by reducing the risk of a blowout. To enjoy these benefits, follow these rules for tire maintenance.

How to Get the Most from Your Tires

1. Check Tire Pressure

Your tire pressure affects the shape of the tire and the amount of strain placed on its walls. A correctly inflated tire grips the road and supports the car better than one which is over or under inflated. Check your tire pressure at least once a month to make sure it’s at the level specified by the manufacturer.

2. Look for Damage

A tire that’s been damaged by the weather may begin to crack, creating weak spots in the rubber. Look for rough or bald areas where the tire has been scraped, or bubbles in the surface, which are signs that part of the rubber is weakening. Any of these issues may mean it's time for a replacement.

3. Check Tread Depth

Your tire tread should be at least 1/16 of an inch deep all the way around and across the entire width of the tire. To check it, place a penny between the treads. If you can see the top of Lincoln's head, your tires are worn out.

4. Rotate Your Tires

TowingTires don't wear at the same rate all the way across. Inner and outer edges get different amounts of wear due to the angle of the tire and the pressure from turning, and front and rear wheels also age differently. To get the most use out of each tire, rotate them about every 3,000 to 5,000 miles.

5. Check Your Spare

As you maintain your car's tires, don't forget about to check the spare tucked away in the trunk or at the rear or underside of the vehicle. Having a working model handy will help you avoid the need for towing even if you get a flat.
